When the Port of Oakland holds a community appreciation event, the community comes out by the hundreds of thousands. PortFest is an annual celebration that allows the Port of Oakland to not only showcase what they do, but also to show their appreciation for the community. As the major commercial port in Northern California, responsible for boats, trains and planes, the Port of Oakland and its employees are a big part of the areaís commerce and community. Giving back is also important: the event provides a forum for the Port to give $20,000 in donations to deserving non-profit organizations in the area, all of whom are exhibitors at the event as well.

The International Dragon Boat Association brings the the ancient tradition of dragon boat racing to Jack London Square.
Sponsored by the International Dragon Boat Association, the Dragon Boat Races at Jack London Square are an exciting cultural experience. Drawing from the ancient Asian traditions, dragon boat racers from around the world showcase their rowing abilities and their artistic vessels/boats designed to look like dragons! Rowing to the beat of drums, the racers and their boats provide a dramatic show for spectators, who also enjoy sponsor booth displays, food and cultural exhibits, and live entertainment from dancing to taiko drum arts! |
